"The 14 year old bicyclist suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Valley Medical Center for treatment," he said.
The driver of the car involved, a 45-year-old San Jose resident, remained at the scene and was cooperative. According to police, there is no indication that alcohol played a role in this collision.
A preliminary police investigation concludes that the cyclist was riding in the dark without a headlight and wasn't wearing a helmet.
"Our investigators are working to determine the cause of the collision," Adams said.
"We have received some witness statements but ask that anyone with information about the collision that has not already provided a statement please contact us," he said.
On Facebook, readers shared what they had seen or heard Friday night:
- Alina Squeak: I just saw it on channel 5. A car hit a bicyclist an hour ago and the bicyclist is in a medically induced coma at the moment. The driver is cooperative. I came on here to see the location since they didn't say that on the news. So sad. I might walk down there in a moment.
- Gary Lee Lemmon: Thanks for the update
- Jamie Smith: Oh wow I was just down there having Dinner with some friends at michis. We did see cops and fire drive by is though.
- Elisabeth Halliday: We saw it as they were helping the cyclist on the ground. I hope he recovers. Very sad. We were driving there around 9pm and they hadn't put him in the ambulance, yet. When we went past again (after picking the kids up at the community center) at about 9:25 they were clearing up the area. The cyclist had gone in the ambulance, but the bike was still in the middle of the road.
- Sid Terror: Drove by there on the way back from dinner, crunched bicycle and bloody stuff in the road. I knew it was bad. It's too narrow there for a bike lane, but they insist on riding there anyway, a lot of times at night with no lights or reflectors, going
- Campbell Patch: Hey everyone. Sorry to hear about this. I haven't been able to confirm anything, but will let you know if I find anything out. Thanks for asking about it here.
- Elisabeth Halliday: The poor cyclist is in bad shape. I don't know if he was wearing a helmet or obeying the laws, but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt he put probably was. It was a white bike I could clearly see, and it appeared to have reflectors. There is a bike lane on Campbell Avenue, is there not? And the driver was cooperative and probably feels terrible. It appeared to be a sad unfortunate accident. Cyclists have every right to the road as drivers, provided they abide by the laws, just as drivers should.
