7-Hour Standoff At Campbell Home Ends With Child Endangerment Arrests

The man was barricaded inside his residence on the 100 block of W. Rincon Ave. on Tuesday.

CAMPBELL, CA — A Campbell man having a mental health crisis barricaded himself inside his apartment for seven hours on Tuesday, holding his wife inside against her will as officers arrived, according to the Campbell Police Department.

The man, his wife and a third suspect, who were not identified, were charged with child endangerment and resisting arrest. The man was barricaded inside his residence on the 100 block of W. Rincon Ave.

“I am incredibly proud of the exceptional work performed today under very challenging circumstances,” Campbell Police Chief Gary Berg said. “Utilizing their training, patience, and compassion, our officers and professional staff safely and successfully resolved this incident through a great team effort.”

Police responded to a call around 10:16 a.m. Tuesday seeking an ambulance for a mental health crisis. Officers found the man, his wife and several children inside a vehicle in the garage. The man told officers he wanted to hurt himself and would not let his wife leave the apartment, according to police.

The man and his wife eventually came out after seven hours of negotiating with the assistance of Campbell’s Crisis Negation Team and SWAT officers.

A third man on parole for burglary and had a warrant violating his parole was found in the attic by police after the couple surrendered.

“The culmination of a very long and trying day is a safer Campbell where the individuals who broke the law and created a dangerous situation are in jail, and the innocent children are in a safe environment,” Berg said.
