Fire Breaks Out Near South Bay Freeway: CHP

Smoke and flames were seen near an encampment under the overpass connecting SR-87 to I-280.

SAN JOSE, CA — A fire broke out near a homeless encampment beneath the overpass where Highway 87 southbound connects to I-280 along the right-hand side of the freeway, according to a California Highway Patrollog.

At 8:04 a.m. Friday, a driver called to say they saw flames and smoke. CHP transferred the call to fire dispatch. As of 8:07 a.m., a unit had been assigned and was en route to the scene.

As of 8:54 a.m., the fire is no longer listed on the CHP log or 511.org, suggesting it was either a false alarm or minor and extinguished quickly.
