SAN JOSE, CA — One lucky Bay Area lottery player is nearly $800,000 richer after Wednesday’s Powerball drawing.

While no one took home the big jackpot, the most recent drawing saw players in four states holding tickets matching five of the six Powerball numbers, including one person in California, according to the state lottery.

The local winner bought their ticket at a Quik Stop in San Jose and will receive $796,425.

Winners in Kansas, Maryland and New York will get $1 million, but California’s lottery system is pari-mutuel, meaning both jackpots and lesser prize amounts roll back when there is a win and then regenerate based on ticket sales. A five-number Powerball winner Saturday in Southern California will get $5.4 million after buying a lucky ticket in Burbank.

The next Powerball drawing is Saturday, when the jackpot is estimated to reach $925 million, the fourth-largest in the history of the game, which began in 1992.
