American Flags Fly in Campbell

What is Memorial Day? Is it a holiday? Simply a day off from work? How is it different from Veterans Day?

Campbell Patch will try to get to the bottom of these and other questions through videos of local veterans telling it like it is over the course of the next couple days. Look for them starting Friday through Memorial Day, Monday.

In the meantime, as the American flags begin to come out, these are some of the questions that come up.

• Memorial Day is a day to remember those that have died while in service.
• Veterans Day is a day to honor and thank veterans both living and dead for their service.

• Memorial Day was formally known as Decoration Day.
• Memorial Day was first celebrated in 1866.
• Veterans Day is also know as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world.
• Veterans Day was first celebrated in 1919.
• A moment of silence throughout the country will be held Monday at 3 p.m. to honor all those who have died.

In Campbell, the Campbell Veterans Memorial Foundation is working on a memorial to recognize those that have died and honor all those who served, to be built in the Orchard City Green. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 11.

There will be a short Memorial Day celebration at the on Monday, at 9 a.m. with the traditional Marine color guard and prayer and special guest appearance by Chaplain Dave Walker, a decorated Vietnam veteran and a rescue worker at Ground Zero New York.

Also in attendance will be the Band, as well as the Junior ROTC.
