Fire on Highway 17 Shoulder Deemed Intentional

Santa Clara County Fire Department made quick work of a brush fire on the Highway 17 onramp Thursday.

According to fire department spokeswoman, the call came in at 3:02 p.m. on July 5. Four units, including a safety officer were dispatched to the scene.

"We arrived at 3:10 p.m., had the fire controlled by 3:15 p.m. and cleared at 3:25 p.m.," she said.

 The call that came in described the incident as a smoking black trash bag on the shoulder of the onramp, she said. When the fire department arrived on scene, there was a deputy with a fire extinguisher clearing the blaze. 

"There was a total of five separate small burned areas and more than half contained remnants of firecrackers," fire spokeswoman said.

Remnants of firecrackers were also found along the roadway.

"Because the remnants were the only ignition source found, the fires were deemed intentional," she said.
