It's 4/20, But Not in Campbell

Unofficial marijuana holiday is not a big deal in town, Campbell PD says.

Wednesday is April 20, better known in some circles as 4/20 and a celebration of marijuana culture.

Thousands of potheads and marijuana supporters are expected to descend on UC Santa Cruz to smoke together at 4:20 p.m., the traditional weed-smoking Happy Hour.

But in Campbell—a town without a medicinal marijuana dispensary —Wednesday's unofficial pot-smoking holiday doesn't mean much.

"We have a marijuana problem just like any other part of the country," says Campbell police Capt. Dave Carmichael. "Not sure if its any bigger than anywhere else, but we don't change our (patrol) operations for today."

In his experience, the issue has been one that plagues the late teen, early 20-somethings within the city, Carmichael says.

On April 18 at about 9:40 p.m., a 14-year-old was found to be in possession of marijuana on the 1500 block of More Avenue.

And as far as major marijuana growers or busts within the city limits, he says he's not aware of any in recent years.

"We have obviously had some 'normal' sales and possession cases, but nothing with multiple pounds or lots of plants," Carmichael says.
