Officer Shoots Man Who Came At Cops With Knife, Attacked Woman: San Jose Police

The man hid under a pile of clothes, brandished a knife at officers, and barricaded himself for hours after police shot him, officials said.

SAN JOSE, CA — A San Jose officer shot a man after the man attacked a woman and came at police with a knife, according to authorities, who said the man barricaded himself in a bedroom for several hours after the shooting.

The man, who is 44 years old and from San Jose, was in stable but critical condition Monday, police said.

Officers responded around 7:45 p.m. Sunday to a home on Sutter Street after receiving a report that the man was intoxicated and throwing dishes at a woman who had locked herself and her four children in a bedroom, according to police, who noted that authorities were told the man had threatened to kill the woman.

A family member met officers outside the residence and told them he had intervened and disarmed the man, police said, adding the man had slashed the family member’s arm with a knife.

The woman and her children exited the home safely before officers attempted to apprehend the man, according to police.

Officers found him hiding under a pile of clothing in a bedroom, and, as they tried to dismantle the pile, the man revealed himself, armed with a kitchen knife, police said. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon and began to withdraw, but the man advanced with the knife raised, according to police.

One officer used a Taser on him, but the man shielded himself with a blanket and kept advancing until he was within several feet of the closest officer, at which point an officer shot him, police said.

The man barricaded himself in the bedroom for several hours, and the remaining residents were evacuated, according to police. He was taken into custody shortly before midnight with the help of tactical medics and K-9 resources, police said, adding he was brought to a hospital.

The man has a history of intimate partner violence and was in violation of a criminal protective order, according to police.

“Our officers showed bravery and composure during this incident and without hesitation put their lives in danger to protect others,” Chief Paul Joseph said at a press conference Monday livestreamed on YouTube.

The officer who shot the man has six years of experience with the San Jose department, according to police, who said the incident is under investigation by several bodies, including the department’s Internal Affairs Unit and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor.

Sunday’s incident was the city’s fifth officer-involved shooting so far this year, police said.
