San Jose Gets $285K Grant For Traffic Safety Programs

Grants awarded by the state help fund DUI checkpoints and other efforts meant to reduce serious injuries and deaths on San Jose roads.

SAN JOSE, CA — The San Jose Police Department received $285,000 in state grant money to support traffic enforcement and education programs, officials announced Tuesday.

The grants are awarded annually by the California Office of Traffic Safety, tapping funds allotted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to police officials, the funds will support efforts to reduce serious injuries and deaths on San Jose roads through next September. Police said the grant will support DUI checkpoints and high-visibility patrols, distracted driving enforcement campaigns, and other enforcement efforts designed to address dangerous behaviors behind the wheel.

Other efforts target dangerous driving behaviors that can put pedestrians and cyclists at risk, along with violations most associated with car crashes, like speeding and failure to yield.

The money also helps support community presentations related to traffic safety issues and officer training for certification to perform field sobriety tests and drug recognition.
