SJ Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Vehicle Identified

The man was walking across Snell Avenue and Cedargate Lane last Wednesday where no controlled intersection exists.

SAN JOSE, CA -- A 31-year-old man who was hit and killed in San Jose last Wednesday has been identified as Ryan Hays, the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office reported.

The crash was reported at Snell Avenue and Cedargate Lane at about 7:15 p.m. Police determined Hays was walking in an uncontrolled intersection when he was hit by an SUV traveling south on Snell.

Hays, a San Jose resident, was taken to the hospital and died a short while later. Friends and loved ones on social media remembered him as big-hearted man with a "contagious smile" who impacted many people. He leaves behind his wife and their baby.

The driver of the 2001 Toyota SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, and neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.

Hays' death was the ninth traffic-related fatality of the year on San Jose streets, according to police.
