The school, located along San Jose's border with the city of Campbell, is part of the Campbell Union School District and the district's superintendent said the boy was a third-grader there.
"Our school community is heartbroken by this development, as every single one of our students we care for and love like our own," Superintendent Shelly Viramontez wrote in a message to the school community.

"As a parent, and as your superintendent, I ask you to please hold the family in your thoughts, as they will need our entire community to hold them in our arms."
Viramontez said counselors are being made available to students and staff at the school.
Campbell City Councilmember Sergio Lopez, who said he was an alumnus of Castlemont Elementary, wrote on social media that he was "heartbroken -- and furious" about the collision.
"Speeding to get to the next red light three seconds sooner isn't worth the cost of innocent lives. All drivers need to do our part to get to a world with no more senseless pedestrian deaths," Lopez wrote.
The fatal collision is the 47th on San Jose city streets so far in 2022, police said.
