Man Hospitalized Following Suspected Hash Oil Explosion

Investigators found several large butane tanks and manufacturing equipment, sheriff's officials said.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A 38-year-old man was injured and a home destroyed in a butane lab explosion in Felton on Tuesday afternoon, Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies reported.

Deputies reported to a large explosion and possible structure fire at about 1:40 p.m. in the 300 block of Creekside Way in Felton. A man inside the home was taken to the hospital and the explosion ripped out walls and exposed the interior of the home. Deputies said the cause was an illegal butane honey oil lab extraction process.

Investigators found several large butane tanks and manufacturing equipment, in addition to 272 pounds of processed cannabis and finished butane hash oil, sheriff's officials said. The sheriff's office is investigating the matter and said criminal charges are pending for manufacturing a controlled substance.
