City Grants Available for Agricultural, Coastal and Wetland Projects

Grants previously funded by the Agricultural Conversion Mitigation Fee program range from $15,000 to $2 million.

Projects that may qualify for a grant include:

  • Restoration of the coastal and lagoon environment;
  • Purchase and improvement of agricultural lands for:
    • Continued agriculture production, or
    • The provision of research activities or ancillary uses necessary for the continued production of agriculture and/or aquaculture in the city’s coastal zone, including farm worker housing;
  • Restoration of beaches for public use; or
  • Improvements to existing or proposed lagoon nature centers.

The fund contains approximately $500,000. The minimum funding amount the city will consider is $2,500.  

Projects that have received funding in the past include remodeling lagoon nature centers and improving aquaculture production at Agua Hedionda Lagoon.

The program was created by the state in in 1984 and has been administered by the city since 2004. Detailed information about the program and grant application process is available on the city’s website or by contacting Kevin Pointer at 760-602-4620. 

A seven-member, City Council-appointed public committee will review grant applications and recommend projects for funding to the City Council. The City Council will make the final decision on grant awards.  Completed application forms must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on May 24, 2013.
