Crews Contain Burn Zone of 45-Acre Carlsbad Wildfire

CARLSBAD, CA — Crews working to contain the smoldering remnants of a wildfire that blackened dozens of open acres in the eastern reaches of Carlsbad completed the task Friday, roughly 24 hours after the blaze erupted.

Flames began moving over hilly terrain off Corte Claro and Camino Minero, near the western San Marcos city limits, shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday, Carlsbad Fire Department spokesperson Holly Angeles-Gonzales said.

Authorities cleared people out of areas east of Rancho Santa Fe Road and south of San Elijo Road as the fire grew and established a temporary shelter for evacuees at Stagecoach Park on Camino De Los Coches in Carlsbad.

Within about 2 1/2 hours, firefighters had the spread of the flames halted at roughly 45 acres, according to Cal Fire, one of several agencies that battled the blaze. No structural damage or injuries were reported.

Crews had the burn zone completely surrounded by firebreaks as of about 3 p.m. Friday, the state agency reported.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
