Cerritos Weekly Crime Recap: June 20-June 26

The investigated 21 Part I felony crimes during this week. Residential burglaries, vehicle burglaries, and vehicle thefts increased as robberies and commercial burglaries were lower. Calls for service by patrol deputies went down to 295 from 333. The 2011 weekly average in calls for service is now 267.
ROBBERIES
There were no robberies reported during this period.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES
Residential burglaries increased from four to five in this week. the Burglars made entry into the homes through an unlocked door and an unlocked window, two pried windows, and one shattered sliding glass door. Laptop computers, jewelry, and cameras were taken in the thefts. The 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries is at 3.7.

COMMERCIAL/OTHER STRUCTURE BURGLARIES
Two commercial burglaries were investigated last week. Both break-ins occurred at closed businesses where a lock was removed and a skylight shattered. The only reported losses were speaker boxes and comic books. The 2011 weekly average in commercial /“other structure” burglaries is 3.0.
VEHICLE BURGLARIES
Vehicle burglaries rose from six to eight during this period. High-volume commercial parking lots were the crime scenes in seven of the cases, of which five involved SUVs. Three GPS units were stolen along with purses, eyeglasses, cameras, and laptop computers. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 5.7.
Sheriff's safety tip: Wallets and purses are commonly stolen from the passenger compartment of vehicles. These items are some of the most desirable targets for thieves as they yield cash, credit cards, and other forms of identification (including Social Security cards) that can be used for multiple purposes. Keep this in mind before you take the chance and leave these items behind.
VEHICLE THEFTS
One vehicle theft was reported during this period when an SUV was taken from a high-volume commercial parking lot. The 2011 weekly average in this crime is now 2.7.
Sheriff's safety tip: Do you have the means to track your vehicle in the event it is stolen? Many devices are available for a nominal installation and monthly fee.
Neighborhood Watch Town Hall Meeting Scheduled for August 17, 2011
The next Neighborhood Watch Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday August 17, 2011 at 7 p.m. at the located at 12340 South St. near Ely Avenue. Members of the sheriff's will offer an in-depth presentation on crime in the city. Attendees are encouraged to bring any questions they might have on safety concerns and issues.
