Man Shot, Killed while Driving in Gateway Area

A man was fatally shot as he drove in the Compton area, and his killer remained at large Friday, authorities said.

The attack took place in the 14500 block of Cairn Avenue about 11 p.m. Thursday, Deputy Trina Schrader said. Dewayne Christian, 43, of Compton died at a hospital, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

It was unclear if Christian was shot by someone on foot or in another vehicle. A light-colored sedan was seen leaving the area after the crime, the sheriff’s department reported.

The motive for the shooting was not known, and no information was available on the suspect. Anyone with information on the slaying was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
