Whitney High School Grad Awarded with $1,500 Scholarship

Cerritos resident, Darren Chen, has been awarded with a $1,500 scholarship for students seeking careers in manufacturing.

graduate Darren Chen has been awarded with a $1,500 college scholarship from the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, Intl. (FMA).

Chen, who is also a Cerritos resident, will be attending Stanford University in the Fall with plans to major in mechanical engineering.

“We applaud Darren for being selected as a 2011 FMA scholarship winner and are pleased to assist him in fulfilling his academic goals,” said Gerald Shankel, president and CEO of the FMA.

“Darren recognizes that working a skilled manufacturing job can be rewarding financially and fulfilling personally, and with the education he has chosen he will be more competitive in the 21st century manufacturing job market.”

As the winner of the grant, Chen also received a copy of a Student Design Kit CAD software package from the SolidWorks Corporation. The kit is a user-friendly Windows-based 3D CAD application that gives students the ability to create “real-life” 3D designs that they can easily manipulate.

Each year, the FMA gifts scholarships to college- or trade school-bound applicants who seek careers in manufacturing. This year, $30,000 in scholarships were awarded to 20 winners across the nation.

To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must be full-time students meeting a specified minimum GPA, and enrolled in an engineering or manufacturing-related course of study, or a trade or technical program leading to a career in manufacturing. Applicants are responsible for submitting academic records and an engineering or manufacturing-related program description with each application.
