Algae Bloom Warning For Horseshoe Lake

The City's Park Division would like to alert the public about potentially harmful algae bloom in Horseshoe Lake in Upper Bidwell Park.

From the City of Chico: The City’s Park Division would like to alert the public about a potentially harmful algae bloom in Horseshoe Lake in Upper Bidwell Park. Like other bodies of water in California, algae blooms can form in certain conditions, such as the presence of excess nutrients, warm weather, and in stagnant non-flowing water. However not all blooms contain harmful toxins.

As a precaution, the City is working with the Butte County PublicHealth Department to post “Warning”signs asking people to please keep out and to not let dogs or other animals enter Horseshoe Lake until water samples can be tested. This is an especially important warning since dogs are allowed off leash in this area of Upper Park. The public will be notified when the test results become available.

More information regarding harmful algal blooms can be found on the California Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) Portal at https://mywaterquality.ca.gov/habs/.
