Nineteen lives lost are honored (chicosol.org) — Nineteen people who died while unhoused on Chico’s streets or in shelters this year were remembered Dec. 21 at the city’s fifth Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day gathering at the Our Hands sculpture. Local advocates read names in the rain, shared memories, and renewed calls for better non-congregate shelter options and more transparent tracking of deaths among Chico’s unhoused neighbors.

2. Chico journalist sues DA Ramsey over public records (chicosol.org) — A Chico-based journalist has filed a new lawsuit in Butte County Superior Court accusing the district attorney, Chico Police Department, City of Chico and sheriff of unlawfully withholding records on several recent officer-involved shootings. The case challenges how local agencies apply California’s Public Records Act and could determine how much information Chico residents can access about deadly and non‑fatal police encounters in their community.
   

3. Man drowns in Redding floodwaters as heavy rain heads toward SoCal (mercedsunstar.com) — Northern California’s deadly flooding has already claimed a life in Redding, and storm totals include more than a foot of rain in Plumas National Forest just east of Chico. With an atmospheric river sliding south and nearly all of California under flood watch, residents across the region are urged to prepare for more heavy rain, possible evacuations, and dangerous travel conditions this week.
   

4. Elderly Target employee Jeanie Beeman honored on stage at AmericaFest days after Charlie Kirk t-shirt fiasco (primetimer.com) — A viral confrontation at a Target store in Chico over an employee’s Charlie Kirk T-shirt has catapulted elderly worker Jeanie Beeman into the national spotlight. She’s since been honored onstage at AmericaFest, received hundreds of thousands in donations, publicly forgave her critic, and says she hopes to retire and cover her bills with the support.
