1 Killed, 3 Injured In Fiery Contra Costa Crash

BYRON, CA — A fatal crash Wednesday afternoon in East Contra Costa County also caused a grass fire. One person died and three people were injured in the three-vehicle collision on Vasco Road near Byron, authorities said.

The crash involving two pickup trucks and a service van was reported shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday on southbound Vasco Road, just south of Camino Diablo, according to the California Highway Patrol and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

Two of the injured parties were airlifted to hospitals and one person was taken by ambulance to a hospital, Con Fire said.

A Sig-alert was issued around 2:30 p.m. for Vasco Road, which was closed in both directions south of Camino Diablo. A message board was activated on Interstate 580 advising motorists that all lanes of Vasco Road were blocked.

At 5:11 p.m., the roadway remained closed.

Around 5:45 p.m., a fire broke out as one of the cars was being moved and fully engulfed the car. Flames spread east into a large grass fire, according to the CHP.
