BART Discusses Antioch Extension Parking Fees, Fares
A two-thirds vote will be required for approval.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — BART's board of directors held a public hearing this morning on proposed fares and parking fees for the new extension to Antioch. The Pittsburg Center and Antioch stations are 2.9 and 9.1 miles from the Pittsburg/Bay Point station, respectively, and the fares will likely be determined using an existing formula based on distance, which BART staff say will avoid adverse effects on riders.
According to the formula, the cost of traveling from Antioch to Embarcadero, 12th Street in Oakland or San Leandro would cost $7.50, $5.70 and $6.35, respectively. The same trips from Pittsburg Center would cost
$6.85, $5.05 and $5.70.
For commuters using the Pittsburg/Bay Point station, which is already in operation, those trips currently cost $6.70, $4.90 and $5.55.

To travel from Antioch to Pittsburg Center or Pittsburg/Bay Point would cost just $2. Anyone paying with a paper ticket after Jan. 1 will also be subject to an additional charge of 50 cents.
The revenue generated by those fares will be used to meet operating expenses like payroll and benefits, obtain supplies, equipment and materials, fund capital projects and meet other financial needs.

No final action was taken on the matter at today's board meeting in Oakland. It is scheduled to return to the board on Dec. 7, at which time a two-thirds vote will be required for approval.
Parking availability is also expected to be an issue at the new stations. There are currently an estimated 980 people on the wait-list for a parking permit at the Pittsburg/Bay Point station, but there are no plans to
issue permits for the new Pittsburg Center station because it has a small parking lot with just 262 stalls and high demand.
The Antioch station parking lot, however, will have 1,012 stalls.
BART staff is recommending that parking fees at those stations remain consistent with those at most of the other stations within the BART system.
Parking will cost $3 per day or $6 with a single-day reserved permit. Monthly reserved permits will be available at the Antioch station for $105. Parking at the new stations is expected to generate roughly $900,000 per year.
Staff estimated that while parking spaces generate $3 per day, they cost roughly $1.25 per day to maintain.
