City Of Concord Secures Nearly $8M In Transportation Grants

CONCORD, CA — The City of Concord was recently awarded $7.9 million in grant funds from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to support a massive street lighting and safety improvement project. This is the largest grant allocation to any Bay Area agency from Caltrans’ $225 million for projects designed to reduce traffic deaths and injury on city and county roads.

The funding for Concord will go toward improvements like installing new lighting, pedestrian countdown signals, and additional bicycle safety, as well as updating existing lighting, uncontrolled crosswalks, and signal phasing, and more.

“We are grateful to Caltrans for recognizing the value of these projects to enhance safety in Concord,” said Mayor Laura Hoffmeister. “This funding represents a significant investment in the implementation of Concord’s Local Roadway Safety Plan, which includes various components toward the goal of achieving zero severe and fatal injuries by 2033.”

Concord adopted a Local Roadway Safety Plan (LRSP) in August 2022, which evaluates hot spots throughout the city to identify countermeasures that can be implemented through Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Concord has secured additional grants for its transportation safety projects from One Bay Area Grant program, Active Transportation Program/Caltrans, Congress, and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
