Contra Costa Nonprofit In Need Of Support Amid Federal Funding Cuts

Whether it's a donation of money or time, White Pony Express needs help to keep the communities of Contra Costa County nourished.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA—Faced with a funding gap caused by federal spending cuts, a Concord-based nonprofit put out an urgent call for help.

Every day, White Pony Express rescues surplus food from over 80 grocery stores, restaurants and other outlets, and then distributes the food to at more than 100 nonprofits throughout Contra Costa County. The organization said Friday it stands to lose one-third of its budget and needs to raise $350,000 by May 31 to make up for it.

"With one in five people in our community facing hunger and meal costs at a 20-year high, WPE remains steadfast in its commitment to providing fresh, healthy food deliveries to more than 100 nonprofits serving our most vulnerable community members," Spokesperson Trish Hearney said.

"Critical Moment to Act"

White Pony Express has launched the Nourish to Flourish Spring Fundraiser. Through May 31, the organization is calling on individuals, businesses and philanthropic partners to help by making a monetary donation, spreading the word on social media and other networks, volunteering, or considering a partnership.

Despite an abundance of surplus food, only 2 percent is currently donated to organizations such as White Pony Express. The nonprofit sees this as a massive opportunity to expand food access and is working to scale its service model. This means the need for local partnerships and donor support has never been greater.
