Fatal Crash Closes Highway 4 Near Brentwood

The head-on collision involving a big rig and a Toyota Corolla was blocking all lanes and a Sig-alert was in effect.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — State Highway 4 was closed Thursday morning at the site of a fatal crash near Brentwood.

The collision involving an International big rig and a Toyota Corolla was reported at 5:48 a.m. Thursday on SR-4 east of Balfour Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Sig-alert was issued at 6:12 a.m. as the roadway was closed between Balfour and Marsh Creek, the CHP reported.

As of 9 a.m., a severe traffic alert remained in effect and there was no estimated time for reopening the roadway. Eastbound traffic was being diverted to Balfour and westbound traffic was diverted to Marsh Creek.

The CHP determined that the driver of a silver Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound and an International truck was traveling westbound when the Toyota driver crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with the truck.

The Toyota driver, who was in the car alone, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the International, who was also traveling alone, was not injured.
