The male occupant survived but with major injuries. He was rushed to a hospital.
The CHP said neither were wearing their seat belt when the crash occurred. Investigators were still trying to determine which person was driving at the time of the crash and whether DUI was a factor.
The crash closed all but one northbound freeway lane, prompting a Sig-alert. Traffic delays continued until around 1:30 p.m. when all lanes were reopened.
The CHP asked anyone who witnessed the crash or events leading up to it to contact the Contra Costa Area office at 925-646-4980 or email their contact information to 320Investigations@chp.ca.gov to be contacted by the investigating officer.
