The Gavel Will Be Passed: Time For A New Concord Mayor

CONCORD, CA — The time has come to rotate mayors, or, as it's called in Concord, reorganize the city council.

Elected city councilmembers meet each December to choose who from among them will serve as mayor and vice mayor for a one-year term.

On Tuesday, the city council will vote on who will fill the mayor's seat for the next year during the reorganization process.

The current mayor, Carlyn Obringer, was selected in December 2024 to fill the seat, with Laura Nakamura as vice mayor.

On Dec. 9, residents are invited to find out who the next mayor and vice mayor will be.

Five districts divide Concord, with council members serving overlapping four-year terms. Concord residents vote for city councilmembers in district-based elections. Councilmembers choose mayor and vice mayor.

In December 2024, Obringer, who represents District 2, was sworn in to her third council term, and Councilmember Pablo Benavente, District 4, took the oath of office for his first term. Both ran in contested races. The newly seated City Council also selected Obringer as mayor.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 1950 Parkside Drive.

A brief reception will be held after the meeting at the Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle.
