Razor-Thin Lead For Concord City Council Election

Just five votes separate the top vote getters in one race.

CONCORD, CA — At midnight on election night, just 5 votes separated the first and second place candidates for the Concord City Council District 4 seat. Edi Birsan held the ever-so-slight lead over Pablo Benavente, 2542 to 2537. As more mail-in-ballots arrive and are counted in the coming days, the outcome could flip.

As of September, the California Secretary of State reported that 22,310,352 Californians were registered to vote, which accounts for almost 82.92 percent of the state's eligible voting population.

As of Sept. 6, 714,337 residents in Contra Costa County were registered to vote—nearly 90 percent of all eligible voters. Of those registered, 53.16 percent were Democrats, and 18.86 percent were Republicans, a slight rise from 18.31 percent in 2022.

Contra Costa County has the seventh-highest percentage of Democrats in the state, behind San Francisco, Marin, Santa Cruz, Alameda, Sonoma and San Mateo counties.
