Coronado's Namesake Ship Suffers Minor Fires at Sea, Navy Says

Two small fires were quickly put down aboard the littoral combat ship Coronado during sea trials, the U.S. Navy said, according to DefenseNews.com.

The blazes took place Friday as the Coronado was part of trials at sea in the Gulf of Mexico; no one was hurt, the report said.

Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka and longtime resident Susan Keith were part of the festivities when the ship was christened last year.

DefenseNews said the Coronado was “conducting a full-power demonstration and running at high speed” when insulation in the exhaust system smoldered and caught fire. 

A second run of the system led to another small fire. In both cases, according to the report, the fires were quickly extinguished. 

The ship was able to return to the Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Ala., where it was built, so officials from the Navy could assess the damage.
