Deputies To Crack Down On DUI Drivers Over Holidays In San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA — The San Diego County Sheriff's Office will be out in force this holiday season in an effort to stop intoxicated drivers and keep the roadways safe.

Deputies will be conducting increased patrols through New Year's Day to catch impaired drivers. Sheriff's officials reminded the public not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which includes marijuana, over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications.

So far this year, deputies have arrested more than 1,100 people on suspicion of DUI. A DUI arrest and conviction can cost more than $15,000 in legal and court fees, according to the sheriff's office.

"There is no excuse for impaired driving," Sheriff Kelly A. Martinez said in a statement. "Make it a safe holiday season for everyone by not driving under the influence."

Funding for the DUI enforcement program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
