CULVER CITY, CA -- The man suspected of beating and robbing a 90-year-old man in a Culver City mall was in custody Tuesday, police said.

Robert Bernoudy of Los Angeles was arrested Thursday on suspicion of robbery and elder abuse, according to Culver City police.

The attacked allegedly happened at the busy food court. Toledo said he was eating lunch when the suspect allegedly approached him and asked for money. The attacked happened when Toledo refused to give the man money, he said.

The suspect "walked up to the victim, ripped gold chains from his neck and threw him to the ground," police allege.

"While the victim was on the ground, the suspect took his wallet and fled on foot in an unknown direction," police said.

The nonagenarian was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Culver City police released footage of the alleged attacker but only when he was running away. That footage generated numerous leads, which led detectives to case out Bernoudy's home. He was arrested without incident at a nearby service station, police said.

"Based on the totality of the investigation, the detectives are confident that Bernoudy is the person responsible for this crime," according to a police statement.

Bernoudy was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to sheriff's inmate records.
