Iconic CA Amusement Park To Close — Here's Why
The park is nearing its 50th birthday but could soon close, reports said.

SANTA CLARA, CA — California’s Great America may be in one of its final seasons, with plans for a potential closure in two years on the horizon, according to reports.
Parent company Six Flags said the Santa Clara amusement park will likely close after its 2027 season, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, with California’s Great America expected to remain in operation at least through October of that year.
The news comes after the park’s land was sold in 2022 to logistics real estate company Prologis for $310 million, and, two years later, park owner Cedar Fair merged with Six Flags, according to SFGate. When Prologis bought the land, Cedar Fair was given 11 years to close the park with a lease set to end in 2028 and a possible five-year extension, the outlet reported.

Six Flags CFO Brian Witherow recently said California’s Great America was “very low on the ranking of margins” for the company along with Maryland’s Six Flags America, set to close later this year, according to the Chronicle, which noted the California park first opened in 1976.
In 2025, California’s Great America has reduced its seasonal offerings and plans to end its season before Halloween, SFGate reported.
