Danville Explores E-Bike Safety & Enforcement

The Danville Town Council held a study session to explore ways to better regulate e-bike usage, particularly among minors.

DANVILLE, CA — The Danville Town Council held a study session Tuesday to address growing concerns about electric bike use safety, particularly use among minors who are not properly trained or licensed and have been reported riding bikes that can go as fast as 30 miles per hour.

Following comments, advice, and reports from public, town staff, and the Danville Police Department, the council identified several actions to move forward:

  • Community Outreach and Education: Expand awareness campaigns to educate both parents and children about safe and legal e-bike and motorized bike use. Outreach will target local PTAs, HOAs, community groups, and will feature a collaboration with the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.
  • Increased Enforcement: The Danville Police Department will continue enforcement efforts, including issuing fines and impounding e-bikes that are caught being ridden illegally. This includes riding recklessly in parks, over the speed limit, or other age-related violations.
  • State Advocacy: The town will advocate for legislation to grant local municipalities greater authority to regulate e-bike usage within their jurisdictions.
  • Local Ordinances: Council directed staff to present issues and regulatory hurdles for passing local ordinances, and amending existing ones. The Parks, Recreation, and Arts Commission and Bicycle Advisory Commission will also review existing ordinances to see if further amendments are warranted.
