Danville's Steffens Sisters Advance to Olympic Water Polo Semifinals

Maggie Steffens scored once to help the United States beat Italy 9-6 on Sunday to advance to Olympic Games women's water polo semifinals.

Two more wins and Danville will have a couple home-grown gold medalists.

Maggie and Jessica Steffens helped the United States beat Italy 9-6 in the Olympic Games quarterfinals on Sunday in London.

Maggie scored once with a goal in the second quarter to put the Americans up 5-3. She's still the leading goal-scorer in the competition with 12.

Jessica played 16 minutes, 29 seconds in the victory.

After Italy scored the first two goals of the match, the U.S. took over, scoring six of the next seven goals to to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.

The Americans added three goals early in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

The U.S. will be back in the pool on Tuesday to face Australia in the semifinals. The Austrailians won a shootout against the Chinese, winning 20-18.

The match against the Austrailians will be a semifinal rematch from four years ago in Beijing, when the U.S. beat Australia en route to winning the silver medal.
