DANVILLE, CA — Three Danville students were named as quarter finalists for the 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the most prestigious in the world. The students will be eligible to compete in the Semifinals, and if they do well there, the Nationals. The following three students from Danville all qualified:

  • Amaani Charan, age 14, 8th grade at Chaboya Middle School
  • Aren Lee, age 12, 7th grade at Helios School
  • Shradha Rachamreddy, age 14, 8th grade at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Upper School (Shradha previously received 51st place in 2019, 23rd place in 2022, and 3rd place in 2023, according to Scripps)

Each of the students were sponsored by the San Ramon Valley Rotary Club, which conducts a regional bee every year and sponsors several students who perform well. In 2023, a Rotary Club-sponsored student, Dhruv Subramanian of Windemere Ranch Middle School, was one of just 11 students from the country to advance to the national competition in Maryland, earning national and international coverage. If he’d placed first, he would have received a total of $57,000 in prize money.
