4 Most Dangerous Intersections for Bikes in Davis (Interactive Map)

There are probably far more bike accidents happening than are reflected in the police reports.

Davis is a particularly bike-friendly city, but it's probably not as safe as crash statistics suggest.

Patch recently gathered some stats from the Office of Traffic Safety, which provided the four most dangerous intersections for bicyclists in 2009 -- the last year recorded.

The four intersections in Davis had only two recorded accidents each. Here they are:

That’s because it probably doesn’t reflect reality. It’s a problem that the cycling community would like to solve.

“There may be a lot more accidents taking place than are actually in the police reports,” said Sarah McCullough, an active bicycle rider who follows developments in town.

Plenty of bike-and-vehicle-related accidents don’t result in extremely serious injury or significant property damage (as least in comparison to car-on-car crashes). For that reason, those incidents often go unreported.

That’s fine in the sense that it’s a person’s choice whether they want to record it or not.

But it becomes problematic when you try to gauge the danger of bicycling in a community, because you don’t have an accurate set of numbers upon which to assess.

If bicycle-involved crashes are indeed going unreported at any given intersection, the actual measure of bicycle-friendliness will remain unknown.

With that said, several organizations are working to make Davis even safer, especially in the area on 5th Street, near downtown.

Several locals have described that area as a barrier between north Davis and Downtown; not just for bikes, but for walkers as well.
