VIDEO: A Noose Was Found Hanging from a Football Goal Post at Davis High School

A noose was found hanging from a goal post at the Davis High School football field Friday morning. The incident coincides with the celebration of the ‘Juneteenth’ holiday, which celebrates the emancipation of slavery in America.

The intention of the noose is not known, but the Davis Police Department is currently treating it as a hate incident. 

Lt. Paul Doroshov told the Davis Enterprise that a detective is investigating the noose, which was found by a Davis High employee last Friday morning.

Public officials and activists are expected to call a meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. to discuss the situation. It will be held at the library, and we believe it is open to the public. 

"We emphatically deplore the act of hate that occurred at Davis High School over the weekend," said Mayor Joe Krovoza and Mayor Pro Tem Rochelle Swanson in a statement Tuesday. "We stand firmly with all members of our community, especially those who have known the pain of discrimination and prejudice in the past."

They said the incident is "an unfortunate reminder that we must redouble our efforts in the community – and in our classrooms – to teach and emulate equality and justice."

What are your initial thoughts about this incident?

Last November, a yellow Veterans Day Ribbon was found tagged with the words, “use me as a noose” on the UC Davis campusr. The story was picked up by various media outlets, ultimately prompting a student to issue a written confession shortly after.

Police determined that the incident did not meet the criteria of a hate crime. The student said it was intended as an “ironic statement as part of his artistic endeavors.” That student’s identity was not revealed.
