Boca do Rio Tonight at Sophia’s

Dancable rhythms will be flowing from the deck at this evening. If you haven’t made any plans and you’d like to be a part of the action, the show begins at 10 pm and it costs $5.

A Portuguese term meaning “mouth of the river,” Boca do Rio touts an intrepid manner that lives up to their name. It’s the intersection of several different streams and sources—traditional dance rhythms, in their case, like samba, bossa nova or reggae—all converging to create one bold new flow of energy. The power and beauty of this San Francisco world music ensemble shines in the funk bass, the electronic synth drones, the Latin dance percussion, and the Portuguese lyrics of frontman Kevin Welch, words that speak with the same spirit as groups like SambaDa or Ozomatli. Good luck resisting the urge to dance.
