Check Out the Remodeled Birthing Center at Sutter Davis Thursday

My wife and I will be having a baby at the in September. Safe to say: We're excited about it.

She did a tour of the newly remodeled birthing rooms last week and said that they were extremely cool. She’s a brave woman who plans to go all-natural with this thing, so the whole non-white-wall-bright-light-hospital-room thing is right up her ally. I'm learning that I feel the same way.  

If you plan on having a baby anytime in the future, I think it's worth taking this tour. I’ve found the people at Sutter to be great. The remodeled birthing rooms are just one piece of the larger situation, (as validated by my wife's praise and this Enterprise article).

You can tour the remodeled birthing center from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 19. Sutter Davis Hospital is located at 2000 Sutter Place. Here are the details:

Sutter Davis Hospital’s Family Birthing Center is known in the Sacramento region as the place to give birth if you want a variety of choice in your birth experience. It is the only hospital in the greater Sacramento area that offers water births, volunteer doulas and alternative birthing positions, as well as a midwifery program. It is also known for its high breastfeeding statistics and low C-section rates.

Now, the labor-and-delivery rooms have a warm, upscale, natural look that matches the birthing experiences and excellent outcomes. Sutter Davis Hospital has completed a two-year endeavor to update and upgrade its rooms and equipment. The hospital is holding a free, public open house for the Family Birthing Center’s transformation from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 19.

For years, mothers have come to partake in the many birthing options at Sutter Davis, and patient satisfaction scores were very high on the mothers’ experiences. However, the décor of the rooms always rated quite low.

Help came through the Happy Beginnings project in 2010, a special fund-raising effort by the Sutter Davis Hospital Foundation to raise funds for the Family Birthing Center update. By the end of that year, community members, organizations and staff had contributed more than $240,000 to Happy Beginnings, earning SDH a dollar-for-dollar matching grant from Sutter Health Philanthropy.

Today, the SDH Family Birthing Center rooms feature new furniture, flooring, shutters, privacy curtains and built-in cabinetry to hide medical equipment. They include a sofa that will allow Papa or another partner to rest or even sleep. The birthing rooms are painted in serene shades of purple and blue, post-partum rooms afresh, calming blue-green. Small refrigerators were added to the post-partum rooms to allow birthing moms and family members to store juice or food. Additionally, the department purchased new fetal monitors to replace outdated versions.

“Every detail has been selected to match patient experiences in the different areas of the Family Birthing Center,” said Carolyn Campos, R.N., Family Birthing Center nurse manager.

The Thursday evening open house and ribbon-cutting celebration will be held in Sutter Davis Hospital’s Meditation Garden and will include tours of the new rooms.
