City of Davis To Hold Public Transit, Paratransit, Rideshare Travel Training Workshop

Davis is hosting a travel training workshop to give info on accessing local public transportation options, ride share, and learn bicycling.

DAVIS, CA -- If you'd like to learn more about the ins and outs of getting around the city via bus or bike -- or most other modes of transportation -- the city is soon hosting a workshop where you can learn more.

The City of Davis and transportation partners are hosting a travel training workshop. Learn how to access local public transportation options, rideshare, or learn the basics of bicycling. This year, you can even sign up for one-on-one training.

The training is focused on seniors and those with disabilities, but is also open to the general public. The event is scheduled for 9 am to 11:30 am Saturday, April 29 at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A Street.

Through the program, the city says you can learn to travel to destinations like the movies, a favorite restaurant, shopping excursions, or important appointments with these transportation options.

“At any life stage, and whether due to injury or physical ailment, driving may no longer be an option. The value of this workshop is it helps participants understand their transportation options, enabling them to plan for life course changes or events that might limit their ability to drive themselves.” Davis Mayor Robb Davis said in a statement.

At the event, participants can select one of four training sessions: Public Transit (facilitated by Unitrans and Yolobus), Paratransit (City of Davis Community Transit and Yolobus Special), Bicycling (City of Davis Bicycle/Pedestrian Program), and rideshare (Lyft). Also, representatives from Paratransit Inc., a Sacramento area non-profit, will be on hand providing information on free, door-to-door travel training services.

Following the training sessions will be short supervised group activities intended to break the “fear barrier” of using these transportation services with demonstrations.

The travel training program aims to improve awareness, understanding, usage, and confidence in using local public transportation options or bicycling; forge new social connections; and more importantly, increase independence. The travel training workshop is held annually each Spring.
