Davis Bashing: Sac Bee Coyote-Story Commenters Have Plenty to Say

The bottom half of the Internet can get ugly, especially when Sacramento-area readers weigh in on Davis issues. Here's what online commenters had to say about Davis's recent coyote-killing situation.

The comments sections of news stories can be extremely depressing. The absolute worst qualities of human beings are often put anonymously on display.

A Davis Patch blogger once referred to this space as "the bottom half of the Internet," which is something I remembered while reading the sacbee.com comments on an article about the coyote-killing situation in Davis. (More below)

Whenever the Sacramento Bee covers a story about Davis, I find myself scrolling through pages and pages of comments -- blown away by the level of Davis bashing.

Last year, I read a story on sacbee.com about a on 5th and B Streets. While a man and a woman were in critical condition, Bee commenters quipped away relentlessly about Asian drivers and hippie cyclists.

When a noose was found hanging at Davis High School, things got especially heavy, with stuff like: "[The teacher] can fantasize about hooded KKK villains hiding under her desk all she wants, but the reality is that it's the kids of the libs who are pulling these stunts..."

This week, it’s the coyotes.

It's worth noting that some of the commenters commended Davis for its decision to cut ties with the USDA after near Wildhorse. A few comments challenged the decision, but did so in a productive manner. The bulk of the comments, however, look like the ones I've shared below.

Some focus on liberal politics and elitism, while others seem a bit off topic, to say the least: "Davis = Maggots in training."

On the whole, my recommendation is to ignore SacBee.com's comments section and just stick to their news stories. You’ll lead a much more positive life. But just in case you’re interested in the Sacramento region's perception of our hometown, here are some highlights from the Bee comments:

  • Gimmemymoney: Wait a minute... Especially in the Republic of Davis... I thought that the government was all knowing... Only the government knows the right way to do everything... You cannot have a successful program without government help... Is someone in Davis actually having an independent thought? OMG... get the thought police out... Someone needs to be put in a rubber room until they come back to their senses...
  • Otis: The thing im most po'd about is the fact Davis is up wind......
  • Cincinnaticl6: The city council and protesters should be forced to adopt the coyotes and other wildlife, such as skunks, as pets and take them home. Then there is an outside chance that these people will be able to figure it out.
  • khl1948: What else would you expect from the Peoples Republic of Davis???
  • NorthAtlanticIslander: …Doesn't the People's Republic of Davis understand that the government knows better how to take care of them than they do? I love the irony!
  • Rcaham75helprato: SAVE YOUR UNWANTED CATS AND DOGS FROM BEING KILLED BY THE STATE!!!! DROP THEM OFF ON THE STREETS OF DAVIS!!!! THE FREEEEEE ZONE!!!!! SANCTUARY CITY FOR ANIMALS!!!!
  • Otis: Davis= maggots in training…..
  • Don: Knowing Davis, the concerned residents probably thought that smugglers of undocumented workers were being shot.
  • Sac29er: The Davis solution: hug the coyotes. As I said on this same story yesterday, this was an emotion-driven decision, and I'm surprised Davis acted so rashly on this. They have every right to manage their contractors as they see fit, but that doesn't make this decision any less stupid.
  • Otis: Davis, well on the way to becoming another Berkley.........
  • Nc1: In other parts of the state..they kill the coyote..no biggy, not even worth a story..of course this is Davis in Wonderland..
  • Woodsman001: "But in a community that prides itself on protecting the environment ..." … LOL!! And this community sees absolutely nothing wrong with letting their deadly-disease spreading, native wildlife destroying, invasive species cats roaming free. What sorry-a**ed hypocrites they be! ROFLMAO!!!!!
  • Chuckc: Too bad that Tom Knudson or someone in the elite City of Davis can't spell.

Why do you think Davis gets bashed this way? Do you think readers take equally direct shots at places like Roseville or Elk Grove, or is this treatment unique to Davis? Share your thoughts below.
