Delta of Venus: Davis Music Fest 2012 Schedule

The Second Annual Davis Music Festival is June 23. Bands will be playing at Delta of Venus, Odd Fellows Hall, Sophia's, Luigi's, G Street Wunderbar, Armadillo Music & L Street Plaza, and Little Prague. Here's the schedule at Delta of Venus:

1:30 pm

Smoke Shovelers - Acoustic duo The Smoke Shovelers have spent a few years now sneaking around the periphery of the Davis/Sacramento circuit, playing shows of various sizes. Davis music veterans Roger Kunkel on mandolin and fiddle, and Rusi Gustafson on guitar, banjitar, and harmonica, lend their two-part harmonies to both original tunes and a grab-bag of folk, bluegrass, and country-rock covers.

2:30 pm

Camila Ortiz – Camila is a local junior high student who was discovered on her YouTube channel, which she uses to play masterful covers of artists like Sea of Bees, Wolf Parade and The Shins, as well as her original songs. She recently opened for Jolie Holland and Sea of Bees at The Odd Fellows Hall.

3:15 pm

Musical Charis - The band, whose name literally translates to “musical gifts” is reminiscent of a young Fleetwood Mac with the tour lifestyle of The Grateful Dead. They become a fixture in Sacramento music scene, playing constant shows and touring the nation several times.

ZuhG – This reggae/roots rock band has been changing the face of the music scene in Sacramento. After winning a Sammie, the band went on to grace the cover of Submerge Magazine and play bigger shows like Concerts In The Park in Sacramento and the Whole Earth Festival in Davis. Recently, the Internet went abuzz with their reggae cover of “Wannabe” by The Spice Girls.

5:30 pm

Who Cares – Sacramento’s most talked-about hip hop band Who Cares makes it very clear that they are all about the live performance—and they deliver magnificently. With the usual setup, an emcee and a laptop, combined with a keyboard and a flute player and occasional other instruments, their music adds elements of funk, trip-hop, jazz, and everything in between. They recently played shows supporting RJD2, Sage Francis and Chk Chk Chk. 

7:00 pm

Appetite – Teddy Briggs started out as the drummer for Rooney and Sacramento-based band What’s Up, and eventually began writing songs on his eight-track recorder for his solo project, Appetite. The end result is a layered collection of relentlessly catchy “pop symphonies”.
