Dr. Tecoy Porter to Speak at MLK Celebration in Yolo County
Dr. Tecoy Porter and the Martin Luther King Freedom Center Set to Speak at Annual Event in Woodland

Woodland, CA - On January 9, local community leader Dr. Tecoy Porter will serve as the main speaker for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration hosted by the Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE). The county office of education invites community members to join in the celebration of the life and impact of the civil rights leader.
The event will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held in person at the Yolo County Office of Education, located at 1280 Santa Anita Court in Woodland. There is no cost to attend. Individuals who plan to attend in person are asked to register in advance at https://yolocoe.k12oms.org/2495-243783.
Porter is a long-time community leader in the Sacramento region, where he has served as senior pastor of the Genesis Church in South Sacramento since 1999. After the death of Stephon Clark in March of 2018, Porter formed the Sacramento chapter of the National Action Network. A leading civil rights organization, the National Action Network has been marching and fighting for civil rights since 1991 across the county.

Porter and his family in Minneapolis were among the ministers who helped plan and coordinate George Floydβs memorial service in 2020.
Porter is the author of multiple books and articles on leadership and personal development. He has worked to advance state legislation supporting criminal justice reform and amending police use-of-force practices.

He was also instrumental in opening an elementary school at his church through a partnership with Fortune Charter School, a network of public charter schools with a mission to close the African American achievement gap.
The program will be emceed by County Superintendent Garth Lewis and will feature youth leaders from the Martin Luther King Freedom Center, an Oakland-based organization seeking to strengthen civic engagement.
