It's 9/11, and You've Got a Class Full of Students

Here's how the morning of September 11, 2001 stuck with Jennifer Mason Wolfe.

Davis resident and local blogger Jennifer Mason Wolfe will be featured in a gallery alongside hundreds of others who shared their 9/11 experience as we approach the 10-year anniversary. We'll share that gallery soon. 

Jennifer is a middle school teacher at who is married with two children. Her blog is called Mamawolfe. Here's how the morning of September 11, 2001 stuck with her: 

Before she left to her teaching job on the morning of 9/11, Jennifer Mason Wolfe got an email alert that said something like “Plane Crashes into Building.” She didn’t know the gravity of the situation until she got to school, at which point two thoughts consumed her mind, both of which have stuck with her ever since:

First: In that moment, while the nation was under attack, she became responsible for an entire room filled with children. That feeling – that the unthinkable can happen at any time – was suddenly more real than it had ever been before. If something like 9/11 can happen, then anything can happen.  

Second: She thought about her own children, who were miles away from her at the time, and there was nothing she could do about it in that moment. Her youngest was about a year old; born into a pre-9/11 world, but raised in a decade defined by this major attack and two long wars.

She wanted to be with those children, but she had an important job to do at the school. Both feelings – felt strongly that morning – have remained with her in her life as both a parent and a teacher.
