Local Principal May Get More Work Hours at the Expense of a Teacher

The principal of Davis' King High School could get more hours on campus each week.

Continuation school students in Davis could soon have a principal more hours of the day, but a lead teacher fewer.

The Davis Joint Unified School District school board on Thursday will consider increasing the hours ofΒ the part-time job principal of King High School, who is currently there the equivalent of a half-time position.

"This arrangement is far from ideal and frequently results in the King High campus being left without an administrator on site during the school day," a staff report for Thursday's meeting states. "When issues arise at those times staff must shuffle to address the issue which causes disruption to student learning."

Kim Wallace currently serves as that school's half-time principal, but her other district job as theΒ Director of Instructional Technology and Learning is being increased and she will no longer be working as the principal, Superintendent Winifred Roberson said Monday.

The new King High principal, who hasn't been named, still wouldn't be full-time; officials are proposing to increase his or her hours from a 0.5 full-time equivalence to 0.8, at an increased cost of $12,000 to the district each year.

District officials are proposing to fund that difference by eliminating the school's "Lead Teacher," and having another teacher fill that position as necessary.

Correction: A previous version of this article misidentified the person who would be serving as King High School's principal in the future. Current Principal Kim Wallace will be leaving the school to focus on her other job within the district. Patch regrets the error.
