'Standard Protocols' at Davis Theater in Wake of Batman Massacre

The Davis movie theater showing "The Dark Knight Rises" will continue to operate as it had following an overnight shooting at a Colorado premier of the film in which .

"Just standard protocols," said a manager at Regal Cinemas 6 in Davis, which is showing the film on four screens. 

The Davis Police Department hasn't formalized any extra patrols at the theater, but the incident is in the back of their minds. 

"It's the sort of freak event that could happen anywhere, anytime," said Lt. Paul Doroshov. "Our officers undergo active-shooter training on a regular basis. "Our emphasis is generally at schools, but the principles ... are the same." 

Large crowds will pour in and out of the theater this weekend, with the Dark Knight Rises expected to make $200 million this weekend alone. 

A ticket attendant said that all of the night showings in Davis are expected to sell out all weekend. Hundreds of tickets have already been sold for some of the screenings. 

Other places in the country are ratcheting up security -- New York City being one of them. New York city Police Commissioner Ray Kelly issued the following statement Friday morning:

"As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the 'The Dark Knight Rises' is playing in the five boroughs."

AMC theaters (which we don't have in Davis) has temporarily banned all costumes: 

We will not allow any guests into our theatres in costumes that make other guests feel uncomfortable and we will not permit face-covering masks or fake weapons inside our buildings.

The National Association of Theater Owners released the following statement: 

“On behalf of all the members and staff of the National Association of Theatre Owners, our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of this despicable act and their families. We are grateful for the quick and effective response by police and emergency personnel. Guest safety is, and will continue to be a priority for theater owners. NATO members are working closely with local law enforcement agencies and reviewing security procedures."

According to the Associated Press, a gunman threw tear gas into a midnight showing of the new film "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado, before opening fire on the crowd.
