Students Frustrated by Scheduling of Davis High AP Class

"I heard from one of my current teachers that they put it in 7th period so that it would force people to drop the class and limit the class size."

I received an email this week from a Davis High School student who plans to take AP Physics next year, when he’ll be a senior.

The main issue, student Naji Dmeiri says, is that only one AP Physics class is being offered next year, and it will be the final period of the day, which many seniors like to keep free so it doesn’t conflict with afterschool clubs, sports, and general leisure time during senior year.

Dmeiri said the following in an email:

Students at Davis Senior High School who have signed up for AP Physics have been forced to take it either during 7th period or to drop the class altogether. Almost every senior does not want a 7th period because 1. it limits free time after school for sports, having a job, and other commitments. 2. It leaves "useless" free time in the morning (1st and 2nd period). The students are protesting 7th period AP Physics and trying to get the DHS admin to change their decision to hold the class at that time. If you'd like more of the student-side arguments please don't hesitate to email me.

Dmeiri added in an interview Friday afternoon:

I think they haven't really exhausted all their options in solving the problem. I think it's true, but it's [also] an excuse. They could shuffle people around. Move students, teachers around. I heard from one of my current teachers that they put it in 7th period so that it would force people to drop the class and limit the class size.

So far, Dmeiri says, "only about three" people have decided to drop the class.

We’ll look further into the situation -- which Dmeiri refers to as a “protest” on the part of students -- early next week.

In the meantime, do you have any thoughts?
