Students Trash Belongings at Move-Out Time (VIDEO)

15 black bags filled with food, clothes, electronics and more were found in a Safeway dumpster this week. What does this say about Davis?

Even the most environmentally conscious of people get lazy at moving time.

Rather than give their possessions a chance at a second-hand life, many students facing the end of their lease pile items into dumpsters and then move on with their lives.

Here’s one such example:

Davis resident Larry Fisher found 15 black plastic bags filled with functional household items and canned food in a dumpster behind Safeway this week.

Among the items in the bags were wireless routers, quality sleeping bags, unopened containers of food, clothes, a skateboard, a bong, a hookah, a jar of marijuana stems, and plenty more.

Fisher says that this massive dump of possessions is an annual occurrence, with students unloading their belongings rather than attempting to give them away or bring them to thrift shops.

He discusses the find in the video above.

Davis Patch will follow this story up with a video next week that explores the second-hand potential for many items that Davisites (and Americans) toss into the garbage.

Fisher has a reputation for repurposing such “trash.”
