Theatre... in a Barn! Starting on July 20. (VIDEO)
The Barnyard Theatre was fully funded on Kickstarter. Their first show, "Psyche," will run July 20-22.
A historic barn on County Road 31 has been converted into a working theatre, and on July 20, it will host the first of two plays this summer. Funding for the theatre's ninth season came through the website Kickstarter.
“We raised $6000 to make year's season happen, $1000 more than our original goal,” wrote Ashley Perron of the Barnyard Theatre in an email. “The company will be producing two main stage shows, as well as a workshop of next year’s main stage production and a Nights of New Plays Festival.”
One Kickstarter supporter contributed more than $500. Two gave $250. Four gave $119. Three gave $100. Nine gave $50. Many others gave as little as $5-8. Check out the contribution list on Kickstarter.

Shows will be at the historic Schmeiser Barn, located at 35125 County Road 31.

The summer season will begin with a world premiere of Meghan Brown’s “Psyche,” running Friday through Sunday, July 20-22, and Thursday through Saturday, July 26-28 and Aug. 2-4. All performances will begin at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 general, $10 students and seniors, and with Thursday and Sunday performances A set of "pay what you can" tickets will be available for each performance; starting July 1st you can purchase tickets at this website; to reserve tickets, call (530) 574-1318.
The play, directed by Steven Schmidt, is a darkly humorous retelling of the Eros and Psyche story from Greek mythology. Peter (Anthony Pinto) is a poet locked in an attic coaxing poetry from his muse, the immortal Psyche (Madeline Stone). His mother (Alison Whismore), an aging movie star, is trying to restart her career with the help of her new lover (Jason Oler) and a dedicated assistant (Camille Beaumont).
“Psyche” is “a classic tale of love, betrayal, and blindingly good sex,” which asks what we really want from the people who love us: people who will see us for who we really are, or people who are willing to remain blindfolded.
