UC Davis in Wired: Turn Your iPhone into Microscope for $30

This cheap modification could provide a new tool for doctors in developing countries, according to the Wired article.

With just one tiny addition, your iPhone camera can be used to spot problems in blood cells, like sickle-cell anemia or an iron deficiency.

Wired ran an article Monday explaining how UC Davis researchers used a “1mm-diameter (0.003 feet) ball lens embedded into a small sheet of rubber. The rubber was taped over the lens of an iPhone.”

Physicist Sebastian Wachsmann-Hogiu headed up the project, which has a magifying effect similar to a droplet of water. The cheap and easy modification could provide a new tool for doctors in developing countries.
