Walnut Elementary Gets Grant for the Campus' School Garden

Walnut Elementary will use these funds toward drip irrigation and a new wheelbarrow for their recently renovated Eco-Friendly School Garden, courtesy of an additional grant from Lowe’s.

“Many students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 and several dedicated parents have been highly involved in renovating the school garden,” said Principal Janet Green.

“Together with our focus on Recycle, Reuse, and Repurpose, we are making students aware of the importance of taking care of our community,” she said.   

Walnut Elementary staff and families have been enjoying vegetables such as eggplant, cucumbers, corn, and zucchini in addition to herbs from the garden. 

“We are thrilled to present this award to Walnut Elementary,” says Leesa Carter, Executive Director of the Foundation.  Founded in 1991, the organization was created to support hands-on, environmental learning projects for youth. “We receive hundreds of submissions each year and have to be very selective to whom we award funding. This is one of the few projects from across the country that we chose to fund. We wish Walnut Elementary great success as they work to implement this important project. It is our hope that our combined efforts will educate, empower, involve and invest today’s youth to cultivate a better tomorrow,” Carter added.
